The establishment of the National Quality Control Laboratory came about as a result of a decision by the Ministry of Health to incorporate the facility as a specific component of the National Drug Policy. The main objectives of the policy are:
To ensure the availability of good quality safe and effective medicines at reasonable cost to all those who need them.
To encourage the development of the local manufacturing capability.
The project was first conceived in 1978 following a request by the then Director of medical services to the then Chief Pharmacist to look into the possibilities of improving drug control activities through the development of a quality control laboratory.
